Soto and IES deliver engineered dust collection system for cement plant, against the clock

When IES first brought Soto in for the duct hanger design on a cement plant at Kembla Grange, the deadline was already bearing down. Hired equipment and temporary ducting were on the clock, and the plant couldn’t begin production until a permanent, engineered system was in place.

As Soto’s mechanical team got into the work, they saw the opportunity to add far more value. The dust collection system was a genuinely complex piece of engineering, and getting the full design right would give IES a system they could rely on from day one. The brief grew from hangers into the complete engineering and design of the dust collection system, and it had to be done fast.

Dust control is fundamental in a cement bagging plant. With cement powder as the bulk material, the collection system has to capture it reliably right across the facility to keep workers safe, the plant compliant, and production running. The core engineering challenge was balance. A single collector delivering 50,000 cubic metres of air an hour had to be shared across 25 separate intake points, each with its own flow requirement, while holding velocities high enough across the whole system to keep the powder moving cleanly.

Soto’s mechanical team modelled the full network in Pipe Flow Expert and turned the entire duct design around in about two weeks, working on site throughout to confirm dimensions, keep the model accurate, and liaise with suppliers so the drawings were ready for manufacture.

The result is a permanent, engineered dust collection system designed to perform reliably from start-up, delivered at the speed the project demanded.
